Learning for a lifetime

Published in Young Nation 29 September 2012

The monster of exams usually gulps our hunger and sleep. The whole routine got disturbed, on breakfast time we use to sleep, we skip lunch and at dinner time we eat carelessly and remain awake the whole night in order to study. I witnessed the same situation during my exams.
It was my final exam, the fear was high and the craze of learning everything within minutes was on its full swing. I was complete submerged in the studies to the extent that a night before exam I remained awake and slept only for 2 hours. I revised the already learned stuff again and again.
In the morning my mind was completely jam and sleepy. I drank two cups of tea in order to gain the consciousness. Once again, I revised the whole course and got myself ready for the exam. Entering in the examination hall, I assure myself that I can do the paper and will secure full marks because I have learned everything by heart but all my assurance was ruined when I saw the question paper. It was all opinion based paper. I got shivered because I have learned all the questions by heart without understanding the central idea so I was not in the position to do the critical analysis on the asked questions.
At that movement, the voice of my primary teacher reverberates in my ears that once you have understand the basic meaning of a lesson you don’t have to learn it and avoid the pattern learning by heart because if you forget one word then the whole paragraph will evaporate from your mind.
From that day I realized that learning lecture by heart will give nothing because we will forget it immediately after exams but once we understand the real meanings it will remain stick in our mind for the lifetime. Moreover, in professional life, during interview your boss will not ask the answers of course questions he/she will judge you on the base of your knowledge and talent. So work on your qualification success will come automatically.

To Nishan-e-Azam-e-Alishan

Once again the patriotism is high, the hope and enthusiasm of doing something for nation is present in every soul because today is 6 September, “Defense day of Pakistan”. 6 September is another golden chapter in the history of Pakistan that can’t be neglected.  This day is equivalent to Independence Day, when our enemy India attacked on Pakistan, our soldiers fought with them and saved the country. This war affected both countries financially but none of them could really dominate. As Pakistan remained saved, Defense Day is celebrated on 6th September.
The defense war fought between Indian and Pakistan on Kashmir issue as Kashmir is a princely and Muslim majority state. Both of the countries want to have Kashmir as their part. Despite of the war, the issue remained unsolved but it takes lots of lives and weapons but at last on 6 September the deadly war was ended by the concern and support of UN
Pakistan celebrates Defense day in the memory of the martyrs of the war who was awarded by the Nishan-e-Haider. The day refreshes the feeling of devotion and sacrifice for the country that how our beloved martyrs sacrifice their lives for the country. They left their wives, children, siblings and other family member behind to save motherland. Similarly,  their families are also satisfied and feel proud as they have lost their son, husband, father in the name of Pakistan.
The martyrs include Army officers like Captain Sarwar Shaheed, Major Tufail Shaheed, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed, Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed, Major Muhammad Akram Shaheed, Sarwar Muhammad Hussain, Lance Naik Mehfooz Shaheed, Shaheed Pilot Officer Rashid Minhas Shaheed, Captain Karnal Sher Shaheed and Havildar Lalak Jan Shaheed who gave their life for the country and awarded with“Nishan-e-Haider” on 6th September, 1965. Nishan-e-Haider is a special award given to the brave officers as a reward for their devotion and bravery.
Nishan-e-Haider is the dream of every soldier. Every jawan wants Nishan-e-Haider to shine on his chest but this reward is awarded to only few soldiers.  These are the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation.  National Hero doesn’t mean,  a soldier fought on border or in a war and lost his life, a person who follows Quaid-e-Azam’s teachings and makes his country proud around the world by his work is a true patriotic hero.. We all can become a hero by working or studying hard to make Pakistan proud!

6 September, Defence day is a day to give tribute to the brave soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the motherland. They are the true heroes and their efforts and life history should be highlighted whole year but regretfully, we Pakistanis have linked them to certain dates and usually recall them on those golden days.
Here is the role, performed by the soldiers  who sacrificed their lives in the war of 1965:
Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed:
Captain Raja Muhammad Sarwar Khan Bhatti Shaheed, son of a Muslim Rajput Family (1910–27 July 1948) was in born Singhori village, tehsil Gijar Khan in District of Rawalpindi. He was one of the brave solders among others who had an automotive fire shot on this chest and died at the age of 38.  He was also hit in the shoulder but Inspite of bleeding badly, he kept moving and got to the barbed wire. Sarwar wanted to cut this wire and launch final strike to capture the mountain. As captain was cutting the wire he was hit again, this time in the chest and he fell. That’s how Caption Muhammad Sarwar sacrificed his life for the country and his men captured the territory. For his bravery and great leadership, Sarwar was awarded the highest military award, Nishan-e-Haider.
Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed:
Tufail Mohammad (1914 – 7 August 1958) was born in Hoshiarpur, Punjab and commissioned in the 16th Punjab Regiment in 1943. In August 1958, Major Tufail patrolled an Indian post in the Laksmipur area. Despite he was wounded and highly injured, Major Tufail continued to lead the troops till all Indian driven out as a result of such bravery four Indians were died and three kept in prison. But he got severely injured and fell on the ground, and then got up and said to his officer “I have completed my duty, the enemy is on the run”. Major was taken to hospital but he later died the same day on 7 August 1958 at the age of 44.
Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed:
Major Raja Aziz Bhatti was a Pakistani soldier who received Pakistan’s highest award for heroism. He was born in Hong Kong in 1928. He moved to Pakistan before it titled as an independent state. He lived in the village of Ladian, in the district of Gujrat. There he enlisted with the newly formed Pakistani Army and was commissioned to the Punjab Regiment in 1950. On 6 September war he was Company Commander in Burki area district of Lahore. Major Bhatti moved forward under incessant artillery and tank attack for five days and night for the defense of B&B Canal. He bravely faced all the shelling, gun shots attack of the enemy and died on 10 September 1965 at the age of 37.
Pilot Rashid Minhas Shaheed:
Rashid Minhas was the youngest soldier among all who sacrificed his young age and life for the country. He was only 20 when he drank the sap of bravery, born on 17 February, 1951. In defense war, he was commissioned as a pilot of Air force.  Rashid Minhas was on his routine training flight when his instructor pilot seized the control of aircraft. When Rashid realized that the absconding pilot is heading toward India. He tried to regain the control of the plane but he was unable to do so he damaged the controls and forced the plane to crash 30 miles short of the border on 20 August 1971 and died. For his act he was awarded the top military honor, the Nishan-E-Haider, and became the youngest man and the only member of the Pakistan Air Force to win the award. He also became a national hero. The Pakistan Air Force base at Kamra has been renamed in his honor.
These are the few names, as there’s a long list of brave soldiers who fought till the last breath and sacrifice their life for the country. We should stand up and salute such daring souls!

Back to school

Published on Unique Pakistan

The month of Ramazan has passed and Eid is also over now what’s next? Nothing is next, especially for the students. After enjoying the two months summer vacation holidays, the school going students are again packing their bags to join school from coming Monday, 3 September.
In Pakistan, the months of June and July are considered as the summer vacations for ages and around the world this format is followed but this year, as Ramazan falls into the month of July and August  so, educational institutes in Sindh  announced to remain closed for summer vacations from July 1 till August 31, according to a notification issued by Sindh government. But due to some mismanagement whole institutes of Karachi weren’t followed the new pattern. They continued the previous schedule and hence re-open the school from 1 August. These schools mostly included Cambridge system and other religious schools and now time is over, yes the other remaining schools are ready to unlock the locks of class rooms  for students who are coming back after Ramadan and Eid holidays.
The last day of vacations is usually a mixed feeling day, the fear of home work and punishment scares the heart on the other hand the thought of meeting class fellows and friends makes the heart happy and mostly children pack their bags cheerfully for meeting their teachers and friends again. However, this time all the kids have another reason for going school with a big smile on face as its time for Eid-Milan party and mostly schools will arrange Eid-Milan party in up-coming weeks so fun is never going to end in school life.
Apart from schools, the universities of Karachi also followed this pattern; however, it wasn’t inscribed by the government but by the university management to give relief to the students in Ramadan, therefore, some universities planned to continue their next semester after Eid along with that there are universities who were remained open in Ramadan, hence they celebrated independence day with heart and soul.
Holidays are part of studies that give students time to do rest or join any summer camp for polishing their hidden skills and talents and holidays in month of Ramadan gave number of children a  chance to fast tension freely and many of the children celebrated their first Roza in the holidays. Anyone working in any field gets holidays but it’s in your hand to make them worth or waste. So spend the holidays wisely
